I knew better. I did it anyway.
Have you ever known exactly what you should do...and then proceeded to do the complete opposite?
Yeah. That was me this weekend.
A family member asked for volunteers for their church’s community health fair. I volunteered myself and my kids. Ryan needs Beta Club service hours, and I was happy to help.
Easy enough.
Then I was asked if I could do a smoothie demonstration station.
Now...that was NOT what I had volunteered for. 😂
And immediately, something in me said:
Don’t do it.
Not because I couldn’t do it. I absolutely could.
But I knew it was going to turn into more than I wanted to take on.
I knew I should have simply said, “I can’t do the smoothie station, but I’m still happy to volunteer in another capacity.”
Instead, I started negotiating with myself.
They’ll buy the ingredients.
They’ll make sure I have everything.
It won’t be that much work.
Fine. I agreed. And almost immediately, the little voice inside of me was probably somewhere shaking her head.
Fast forward to Friday night...
Because I wanted to make a seasonal smoothie, I chose an Autumn Glow Smoothie made with sweet potatoes, bananas, warming spices, and a few other goodies.
Which meant the sweet potatoes had to be cooked before the event.
I offered to buy everything myself and get reimbursed because it would be easier.
So after work Friday, I went shopping.
And shopping.
And shopping.
I spent more than $100 preparing for 150+ people, got home after 8 PM, cooked six pounds of sweet potatoes, and still had more prep to do.
By 11 PM, I was exhausted.
Thankfully, I had one moment of sanity.
I decided I wasn't doing another thing. I would go to bed and finish everything early Saturday morning.
And then I woke up.
Wait...
Is that RAIN???
😂😂😂
YES.
HALLELUJAH!
I have never been so happy to see rain in my life.
The health fair was postponed until November.
And all I could think was:
God. Universe. THANK YOU.
Because I knew better.
Before I bought one sweet potato...
Before I spent my Friday night preparing...
Before I spent more than $100...
I knew.
My inner voice had already given me the answer.
I just didn't listen.
Sometimes intuition isn't mysterious.
We often think intuition has to arrive through a profound spiritual experience, a meditation, a card pull, a dream, or some unmistakable sign from the Universe.
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes intuition is simply:
I don't want to do this.
This is going to be more than I have capacity for.
Something about this doesn't feel right.
I need to say no.
And sometimes the hardest part isn't hearing our inner voice.
It's trusting it enough to act on what it says.
We hear ourselves and then immediately invite logic, guilt, obligation, people-pleasing, or “but it shouldn't be that big of a deal” into the conversation.
Before long, our knowing has been talked right out of the room.
That was my lesson this weekend.
Stop asking your intuition to defend its answer.
Sometimes you already know.
And perhaps part of returning to ourselves is learning to trust that knowing again.
So as you move through this week's rituals, pay attention to the quiet messages underneath all the noise.
What have you already given yourself an answer about?
Where are you negotiating with something you already know?
And what might happen if, just once, you trusted yourself the first time?
As for me? I'm listening.
And I'm also trying to figure out what the hell I'm going to do with six pounds of cooked sweet potatoes. 😂
But my work will not be in vain...
Since I already created the recipe, I'm sharing it with you!
It's my Autumn Glow Smoothie, a creamy fall smoothie made with sweet potato, banana, warm spices, and other nourishing ingredients.
Consider it the smoothie that almost took me out. 😂
