When did doing nothing become so hard?
I was talking with a friend over the weekend, and we found ourselves laughing about something that really shouldn't be so difficult: learning how to do absolutely nothing.
And I mean NOTHING.
Not cleaning the house. Not running errands. Not planning meals or cooking for the week. Not visiting friends or family. Not going shopping. Not even feeling obligated to get outside because it's a beautiful day and we should be making the most of it.
Just being.
We talked about how we're both learning to rest without feeling compelled to do something. And even when we have nowhere to be and nothing pressing on the calendar, there's often that little voice reminding us of everything we could be getting done.
Sound familiar?
It's interesting how easily we can turn our free time into another to-do list. Even the things we enjoy can become obligations when we start believing every moment needs to be accounted for.
But here's something I've been reminding myself lately:
Rest is not a reward for getting everything done. It's something we need, whether the laundry is folded or not.
And sometimes, the most nourishing thing we can do is give ourselves permission to simply exist without an agenda.
This Week's Ritual of Remembrance: Remember How to Just Be
Think back to a time when you could spend an afternoon doing whatever you pleased. Maybe you sat on the porch watching the world go by, listened to music, got lost in a book, or spent hours doing something creative without watching the clock.
There was no need to justify how you spent your time.
This week, I invite you to reclaim a little of that freedom.
Set aside some time with absolutely no agenda. Don't fill it before it even arrives. And if you find yourself reaching for your mental to-do list, gently remind yourself that nothing needs to happen right now.
Consider these questions:
Why do I sometimes feel uncomfortable when I'm not doing anything?
Have I confused being busy with being fulfilled?
What would rest look like if I allowed myself to enjoy it without guilt?
And if you do feel inspired to create, explore, or try something new, let it be because you genuinely want to, not because you need something to show for your time.

One Last Thought
We spend so much of our lives taking care of things, making plans, showing up, and getting things done.
But our lives are also meant to be enjoyed.
So if all you do this weekend is sit around in your favorite pajamas, sip your tea, and watch a little television, enjoy every minute of it.
You don't have to earn a peaceful afternoon.
